Horace Benedict

The film Horace Benedict by Aldo Lee and Dimitri Chamblas was created in parallel to the project “Ouvrée, artistes en alpages” by Boris Charmatz. Upon the invitation of the latter choreographer, Anne Collod, Simon Hecquet, Bernard Heidsieck, Matthieu Kavyrchine, Jennifer Lacey, Benoit Lachambre, Xavier Le Roy, Barbara Manzetti, Phil Minton, Jean-Luc Moulène, Steve Paxton, along with a number of extras, came to the slopes of the Semnoz in Haute-Savoie in order to confront choreographic, visual, and sonic material on a monumental scale mountain. “Horace Benedict,” which is the title of this medium length film, is also the name of an eighteenth-century scientist, Horace Bénédict de Saussure, who was instrumental in creating a number of meteorological stations in the Alps and invented the hair hygrometer. This film is not a documentary on Boris Charmatz's project, but a project in its own right, created around, and on the basis of, this event. Dimitri Chamblas explains his intentions: “With this piece, I tried to evaluate the importance of a place vis-à-vis a work, to capture everything including what's in the margins of a work, what influences it and touches it at the deepest level.”
This medium-length film is presented as a simple projection, in the form of an installation, or screened in cinemas on the occasion of presentation of improvised works. The unedited version shown here is in small format, and should be viewed for research purposes only.

Chamblas, Dimitri

Graduate of the  National Conservatory of Music and Dance of Lyon (CNSMD), Dimitri Chamblas  participated in the creation of Bernard Glandier's Trails before being  hired as a permanent dancer by Régine Chopinot in 1993. From 1997, he  committed himself alongside Mathilde Monnier at the CCN of Montpellier and interprets the duet Tout Contre by Emmanuelle Huynh.


In  the early 2000s, he developed a work in the audiovisual field and  realized successively Horace-Benedict (in collaboration with Aldo Lee),  The Key of Places and In our places. In 2002, he began working as a first assistant director in the advertising industry. He collaborates among others with Tranh Anh Hung, Jacques Audiard, César Vayssié and the Zoo. Since 2005, he is associate producer of Same Production and accompanies the development of young directors.

Lee, Aldo

Aldo Lee has studied at the University of Witwatersand (South Africa) where he is received as Bachelor of Art, with the highest distinction, in 1989. In 1995, he takes part in the International Video Workshop for Dance (Glasgow). He moves to fiction with Sacrifice (drama, 30 mn) for which he is awarded the best short-movie prize at the South African Cinema festival. He directs several documentary films and is awarded the prizes for best documentary for La double vie de Dona Ermelinda (The Double Life of Dona Ermelinda, 52 mn) at the festival Vues d'Afrique, Montréal in 1995 ; and in 1999, for Fermiers Blancs, Terre Noire (White Farmers, Black Land, 52 mn) at the festival of the Dhow Countries, Tanzania.

He collaborates notably with artists Rainer Ganahl, Boris Achour, Yann Kopp, and particularly choreographers Hervé Robbe, Jérôme Bel, Rachid Ouramdane... For the association edna, he co-directs Horace-Benedict in 2001 with Dimitri Chamblas and collaborates with Boris Charmatz for his film Une lente introduction (A Slow Introduction, 2007). In parallel, he works regularly as cameraman and director for various projects broadcasted on Arte, France3 (Striptease) or Channel Four.

Musée de la danse

At the bounds of the museum, place of conservation, dance, art of  movement, and choreographic center, place of production and residence, le Musée de la danse is a space to think, practice and expand the boundaries of the dance. If it's registered in Rennes, it's also a nomadic idea. Directed by the choreographer Boris Charmatz, this laboratory-institution explores the possibilities of crossing between exhibition, performative  gesture and articulation of a speech. Workshops, debates, shows, residencies of artists and researchers; offbeat proposals and fantasy collections are born directly from a reflection on what could be this playful and hybrid museum.


The  CCN of Rennes and Brittany, renamed the Museum of Dance by Boris  Charmatz, was directed by Gigi Caciuleanu until 1993, by Catherine  Diverrès and Bernardo Montet until 1996, then by Catherine Diverrès  alone until 2008. Since 2009, Boris Charmatz ensures his direction. From January 2019, the collective FAIR[E] will take over. The  collective is composed of Bouside Aït-Atmane, Iffra Dia, Johanna Faye, Céline Gallet, Linda Hayford, Saïdo Lehlouh, Marion Poupinet and Ousmane Sy.


The  Museum of Dance / National Choreographic Center of Rennes and Brittany  is an association subsidized by the Ministry of Culture and  Communication (DRAC Bretagne), the City of Rennes, the Regional Council  of Brittany and the County Council of Ille et-Vilaine.
The Dance Museum is part of the Association of National Choreographic Centers.
