Première June 11th 1999, Hebbel-Theater, Berlin

Linke, Susanne

Susanne Linke unifies the heritage of German pre-war Ausdruckstanz with contemporary German dance theater. She has had decisive influence on Germany's choreographic landscape. She received her education from Mary Wigman in Berlin before studying at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen. From 1970-1973 she was a dancer at the Folkwang Tanzstudio with the Artistic Director Pina Bausch. At the same time she developed her own first choreographic works.

Within a few short years she attained international acclaim for her solos (" Im Bade wannen", "Schritte verfolgen", her Dore Hoyer reconstruction "Afectos humanos", among others) and her group pieces. She was awarded numerous  prizes for her choreographies and she toured throughout Europe, India, Australia and South and North America. For almost ten years, until the summer of 1985, Susanne Linke headed the Folkwang Tanzstudio. Since then she has also worked as an independent choreographer and dancer, and has been invited regularly by international companies to create guest choreographies, for example, by the Limón Company in New York, the Kibbutz Company, the GRCOP at the Paris Opera and the Netherlands Dance Theater, among others. At the beginning of the 1990s she founded the "Company Susanne Linke" and created two works: "Ruhr-Ort" and "Märkische Landschaften". During this period she was an artist in residence at the Hebbel-Theater, Berlin. Together with her partner Urs Dietrich as a co-director, she created a new company at the Bremen Theater in 1994 and toured in Southeast Asia and Middle America.

She remained there as the Director of Dance Theater until 2000. In the years 2000-2001 Susanne Linke was a founding member of the Choreographisches Zentrum Essen and its designated Artistic Director. At the Choreographisches Zentrum Essen she created the solo-duo piece "Tanz-Dis-Tanz" together with Urs Dietrich, as well as the reconstruction of her solo "Schritte Verfolgen" in 2007.

Since 2001 she has continued to be active as an independent choreographer, among others for the Grassi School in Milano, the Kibbutz Dance School in Israel, Versiliadanza Florenz and the Folkwang Hochschule Essen. In 2004 she created her solo "VISTItatiON", commissioned by Carolyn Carlson. She also created new choreographies for the Paris Opera (2005), the Limón Dance Company New York (2004), the Choreographisches Theater Bonn (2007), the Aalto Theater Essen and the Jeanne Ruddy Dance Company Philadelphia (2008).

Picq, Charles

Author, filmmaker and video artist Charles Picq (1952-2012) entered working life in the 70s through theatre and photography. A- fter resuming his studies (Maîtrise de Linguistique - Lyon ii, Maîtrise des sciences et Techniques de la Communication - grenoble iii), he then focused on video, first in the field of fine arts at the espace Lyonnais d'art Contemporain (ELAC) and with the group « Frigo », and then in dance.
On creation of the Maison de la Danse in Lyon in 1980, he was asked to undertake a video documentation project that he has continued ever since. During the ‘80s, a decade marked in France by the explosion of contemporary dance and the development of video, he met numerous artists such as andy Degroat, Dominique Bagouet, Carolyn Carlson, régine Chopinot, susanne Linke, Joëlle Bouvier and regis Obadia, Michel Kelemenis. He worked in the creative field with installations and on-stage video, as well as in television with recorded shows, entertainment and documentaries.

His work with Dominique Bagouet (80-90) was a unique encounter. He documents his creativity, assisting with Le Crawl de Lucien and co-directing with his films Tant Mieux, Tant Mieux and 10 anges. in the 90s he became director of video development for the Maison de la Danse and worked, with the support of guy Darmet and his team, in the growing space of theatre video through several initiatives:
       - He founded a video library of dance films with free public access. This was a first for France. Continuing the video documentation of theatre performances, he organised their management and storage.
       - He promoted the creation of a video-bar and projection room, both dedicated to welcoming school pupils.
       - He started «présentations de saisons» in pictures.
       - He oversaw the DVD publication of Le tour du monde en 80 danses, a pocket video library produced by the Maison de la Danse for the educational sector.

       - He launched the series “scènes d'écran” for television and online. He undertook the video library's digital conversion and created Numeridanse.

His main documentaries are: enchaînement, Planète Bagouet, Montpellier le saut de l'ange, Carolyn Carlson, a woman of many faces, grand ecart, Mama africa, C'est pas facile, Lyon, le pas de deux d'une ville, Le Défilé, Un rêve de cirque.

Meeting with literature

Collaboration between a choreographer and a writer can lead to the emergence of a large number of combinations. If sometimes the choreographer creates his dance around the work of an author, the writer can also choose dance as the subject of his text.
