Exposition sans titre (2018-12-21)

This exhibition is the manifestation of a collaboration between the CND (France) and The Ar(t)chive (South Africa) to realise a growing collection of South African dance works on the numeridanse.tv website. The first phase of this collaboration forms part of the Seasons France 2012/2013 exchange proudly sponsored by The Institut Français and The National Arts Council of South Africa.

Presented on this exhibition is a range of works from South African choreographers working in dance but bordering various disciplines such as contemporary dance, physical theatre, afro fusion, contemporary dance, ballet and more.

Athena Mazarakis - PJ Sabbagha

Athena Mazarakis was born in 1973 in Bloemfontein, Free State South Africa. She is one of the founding members of The First Physical Theatre Company.

PJ Sabbagha is founding member and Artistic Director of The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative and the Annual When Life Happens: HIV and AIDS arts and Culture.

Nelisiwe Xaba

Born and raised in Dube, Soweto, Nelisiwe Xaba began her vibrant professional dance career of more than 20 years in the early 90's when she received a scholarship to study dance at the Johannesburg Dance Foundation. Xaba's solo career has entailed working in various multi-media projects and collaborating with visual artists, fashion designers, theater and television directors, poets and musicians.

Dada Masilo

Born in 1986 in Soweto, a Johannesburg township, Dada Masilo trained primarily at the Dance Factory in Newton, the cultural district of Johannesburg, as well as at the National School of Art (Johannesburg) and at the Jazzart Dance Theater, Cape Town.

She has collaborated with many famous names on the South African arts scene. In 2013, for example, she collaborated on “Refuse the hour” with the visual artist and director William Kentridge, commissioned and danced “In creation” with the choreographer Gregory Maqoma as part of the Sujet à vif in Avignon, and “Deep night” with P. J. Sabbagha and his collective The Forgotten Angle. She also trains young dancers and regularly hosts workshops in the United States.
