“Nora” is based on true stories of the dancer Nora Chipaumire, who was born in Zimbabwe in 1965. In the fi lm, Nora returns to the landscape of her childhood and takes a journey through some vivid memories of her youth. Using performance and dance, she brings her history to life in a swiftly-moving poem of sound and image. Shot entirely on location in Southern Africa, “Nora” includes a multitude of local performers and dancers of all ages, from young schoolchildren to ancient grandmothers, and much of the music is specially composed by a legend of Zimbabwean music - Thomas Mapfumo.

Chipaumire, Nora

Born in Mutare, Zimbabwe and based in NYC, Nora Chipaumire has been challenging and embracing stereotypes of Africa and the black performing body, art, and aesthetic. She is a graduate of the University of Zimbabwe’s School of Law and holds a M.A. in Dance and M.F.A. in Choreography & Performance from Mills College. She has studied dance in Africa, Cuba, Jamaica and the U.S. and has performed internationally in France, Italy, Japan, Senegal, Zimbabwe, and many other places.

Kovgan, Alla

Born in Moscow in 1973, Alla Kovgan has divided her time between Europe and US, making films and projects with artists from different disciplines since 1996. She brings 15 years of experience working with dance and film collaborations on screen and in theatre, as well as a strong record as a documentary director/writer/editor. 
Within the last decade, Alla co-directed, wrote and edited an Emmy-nominated "Traces of the trade" (Sundance, PBS) about the role of the North in the US slave-trade and "Movement Revolution Africa" (ZDF/ARTE) about Contemporary Dance traditions in Africa, which "Village Voice" described as a “knockout”. Alla also edited "My Perestroika" (Sundance, PBS, Silverdocs, Full Frame) about the last generation of Soviet children to grow up behind the Iron Curtain in the USSR.

Since 1999, Alla has been a member of the KINODANCE Company, an interdisciplinary artist collaborative, creating performances and installations. 
For the last four years, Alla has been developing a stereoscopic 3D film about the legendary choreography Merce Cunningham.

Hinton, David

David Hinton is a writer and translator who has produced a body of work exploring the weave of consciousness and landscape. This exploration is informed throughout by the insights of ancient Chinese culture; and it has primarily taken the form of translation, which he uses as a way to make contemporary poetry that operates outside the limitations of self-identity and the Western intellectual tradition. This has also functioned as a kind of apprenticeship, and Hinton has recently moved toward writing that is original in a more traditional sense.
