COVER

This new creation by Itamar Serussi for the CCN - Ballet de Lorraine proposes a contemporary immersion into the romanticism of Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique.

In this major musical work, the expressiveness of the orchestra is without precedent. The music exudes beauty, elegance, the pastoral, darkness and even the diabolical. The compositional dynamic was itself a revolution in the art of orchestration, and it is this force that has influenced COVER. By choosing this music, Itamar Serussi was interested in the confrontation between, the music’s romantic and dramatic atmosphere, depicting the early 1800s and his own individual, strongly seductive, contemporary corporality. The different ambiances in each of the five movements of the Symphonie Fantastique create the platform for discovery in COVER. The form and structure of the choreography highlights the existing dramatic tension evoked by the musical composition and with this, the piece embarks on a journey from the melancholic to the euphoric, finding itself navigating between conflict and harmony.

Serussi, Itamar

Amsterdam based Itamar  Serussi Sahar (Israël, 1978) started his dance education at the age of  15 at the Israeli Dance Academy. In 1998 he started dancing at the  Batsheva Dance Company.

Since 2006, he  is developing his own personal style. He experiments with physical  boundaries by using humour and improvisation. Trying to break through  traditional dance. His work is playful, light and elegant. All his  pieces are the result of the synergy between him, his surroundings and  his dancers.

From 2010 - 2012 he was residential choreographer at Danshuis Station  Zuid (Tilburg, NL). In this capacity he created several short  productions; Phenomena, Undo, Ferrum, Lust and the full length work  Mono. This last title was nominated for a Swan award  "Best dance  production - season 2011-2012" at the Nederlandse Dansdagen, Maastricht.
The choreographies speak strongly to both audiences and performers and  are performed widely in Europe (Czech Republic, France, Slovenia).

Itamar also  creates works for companies in England, Austria, USA ,France, Denmark,   Belgium and Italy and since the summer of 2014 he became residential  choreographer for Scapino Ballet (Rotterdam , NL)

CCN - Ballet de Lorraine

Since acquiring the CCN title in 1999, the Centre Chorégraphique National - Ballet de Lorraine has dedicated itself to supporting contemporary choreographic creation. As of July 2011 the organization is under the general and artistic direction of Petter Jacobsson.
The CCN – Ballet de Lorraine and its company of 26 dancers is one of the most important companies working in Europe, performing contemporary creations while retaining and programming a rich and extensive repertory, spanning our modern history, made up of works by some of our generations most highly regarded choreographers.
The CCN functions as an art center and venue for multiple possibilities in the fields of research, experimentation and artistic creation. It is a platform open to many different disciplines, a space where the many visions of dance of today may meet.
