Le breaking, un art pour tous

A pillar of hip-hop culture born in the United States, breaking is a dance which in the collective imagination is associated with athletic ground movements. In the company of Bruce Chiefare, choreographer and former world breaking champion, we discover the fundamentals of this dance which for the first time will be included in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. An anticipated first which does not fail to question the tenuous boundaries between art and sport. It is in the small town of Seynod, near Annecy, facing the mountains and far from New York and the big cities, that Bruce Chiefare and his acolytes introduce around a hundred amateurs to breaking, with the aim of participation in the big parade of the Lyon Dance Biennale. 9 months to prepare and the desire to distance oneself from the clichés of spectacular performance to refocus on the sharing and exchange inherent to this practice.
A step outside of your bubble, a sensitive and caring look that resonates like an invitation to dance and exult together!
Children, teenagers, young retirees, so many individual trajectories, also solitudes which, during the course of a project, come together and are discovered in a delightful synergy. Through Henry, Fanette, Patrick, Corentin, Christiane, BBoy Virus and so many others, the whole of society in its diversity is told and meets within this ephemeral and improbable community.

Chiefare, Bruce

He started dancing with battles, breakdance competitions in 1997, and won important competitions such as the French championships in 2001, the world championships in London in 2004, and other international titles. He has represented France in events in South Korea, Los Angeles, Holland, Japan, Spain…
He then evolves into the world of creation, where his gestures completely blossom. He is a performer for companies such as Ethadam, Traffic de style, Régis Obadia, Käfig-CCN de Créteil (French-Taiwanese project entitled Yo gee ti). Today he is a dancer for the Accrorap-CCN company of La Rochelle-Kader Attou, for several of his pieces (The Roots, Opus 14, Break à Mozart), with whom he performs in Asia, the United States, Belarus, Germany, Czech Republic…. He joins collectives such as Freemindz or Wanted Posse. He appears as a jury in “Battles” and it was quite natural that he founded the Flowcus Company in 2017.

Fleuriot, Maxime

He has worked in the choreographic field since 2001. After a career as a journalist and dancer, he was an artistic programmer for the Montpellier Danse festival, the Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, the Maison de la Danse, the Maison de la Culture de Grenoble. In particular, in 2018 he set up the first dance hackathon between London, Liège and Lyon with the Maison de la Danse, the Lyon Biennale, Sadler's Wells, the Théâtre de Liège, and the support of the BNP Paribas group. As artistic director, he also signed the DNA Dance Living Lab, a format bringing researchers and artists into dialogue on stage presented at 104 and Chaillot with Rachid Ouramdane, Nacera Belaza, Kaori Ito, Jann Gallois, Dorothée Munyaneza, Etienne Klein, Anne N’Guyen, Christian Clot…. He was the artistic collaborator of the directors Alain Guiraudie, Yves Jeuland and the choreographers Christian Rizzo, David Wampach, Yuval Pick... He has already directed Come back when you have disappeared with Yves-Noel Genod and Laetitia Dosch, Danser l'invisible with Ana Pi, From a World to Another with Fanny Vignals, Breaking, an art for all with Bruce Chiefare. He obtained support from the CNC in 2023 for the Breaking City project, an immersive project around the history of hip-hop.
