Utopia + Dystopia
Guy Harries + Florencia Guerberof Live
‘Utopia + Dystopia’ is a contemporary opera conceived by musician, composer and performer Guy Harries through three performative investigations that explore time.
In collaboration with choreographer, dancer and visual artist Florencia Guerberof, Guy imagines narratives of an ideal world and those of perpetual disaster.
"Utopia" translates as "no place", existing only as an unreachable state of perfection.
"Dystopia" is birthed as utopia’s negation through discourses of worse case scenarios.
This piece has been created in the context of the exhibition “Liminality (temporal impressions)” curated by Sean McLusky, Kevin Quigley & Bjorn Hatleskog.
It was presented live on 18th July 2019 at Gallery 46, London, UK.
The work has been readapted in 2020 including a motion graphics projection by the designer
Diego Ghirardo, with the performers built as digital models. This new piece rethinks utopia, dystopia and theatre in the context of the current global pandemic with artistic interventions becoming remote and technologically mediated.
