The group

Présences (Charleville-Mézières, Grand Est)

The contemporary dance group, Présences, from the Maison de la Culture et des Loisirs Ma Bohème in Charleville-Mézières celebrated its 30 years of existence in 2012. It is made up of nine female amateur dancers directed by Danièle Wuatelet, a specialised teacher now retired who, at the same time, has always practiced dance with passion and who composes for the group. Some ten choreographies were presented at Charleville-Mézières and Sedan. The participation of the group, Présences, in the “Danse en amateur et repertoire” programme in 2016 enabled it to tackle a different and rewarding style of writing.

The project

Danièle Wuatelet crossed Christine Bastin’s path during a training course at the Laboratoire chorégraphique de Reims in 2012. She found in her a gestural quality whose themes – women, encounters, and the intimate resourcing of gestures – corresponded to the expectations of the dancers in her group made up of women of various ages. Choosing Affame made it possible to experiment and live out stories telling of the desire for love, for a child, for serenity, in resonance with the destinies of the women making up Présences. The piece stood out at its creation as Christine Bastin, who danced it, was pregnant at the time. It offers the opportunity today to breathe new and different life into this work, with a number of women who have already known motherhood. Structured around three duets, the work comprises simple actions (walks, everyday gestures) that can be deployed over and over and that give life to a carnal and committed dance.

Bastin, Christine

Christine Bastin’s dance is emblematic of the rich tones of the Nouvelle Danse Française of the 1980s. The works she composes are thus of great dramatic intensity, very attentive to the creation of characters committed to a very strong presence on stage. These works oscillate between a sophisticated grace and the burning of a raw archaism. Her great creative avidity is nurtured by multiple musical, pictorial and literary references. In 1992, Gueule de loup is thus an evocation of Spain, which draws from the writing of José Cela. She recreates a world in which material poverty rubs off on the roughness of souls: the very difficulty of expressing oneself in the world gives way to the expression of rustic and burning ardours.

Chaumeille, Ivan

Film director, Ivan Chaumeille, has worked with choreographer Dominique Brun a long time, most notably in the production of + One (2014), a creative documentary scheduled as part of the festival “Vidéodanse”, in the editing of which Rafaël Gubitsch participated; he filmed and edited two versions of Afternoon of a faun, choreographed by Vaslav Nijinski for the film Le Faune -un film ou la fabrique de l’archive. He also carried out interviews, and devised and formulated the ROM and video dimensions of the DVD (2007). He shot video sequences for the show Medea-Stimmen by Virginie Mirbeau, created at Festival Les Météores CNN du Havre (2008). With a background in philosophy, he produced a creative documentary entitled Avec François Châtelet, un voyage différentiel (2010) for the collection “À Contre-temps” in co-production with Groupe Galactica, Mosaïque films and Canal 15.

Gubitsch, Rafaël

Rafaël Gubitsch, who is a camera operator, film editor and photographer, produces documentaries and videos around plastic art, music and dance.

He recorded videos by the artist Elliott Causse “Fluctuations” in the context of his numerous installations and monumental frescoes. The film Propagations (2015) portrays the opening of the exhibition, which has the same name as his creation.

He made several documentary videos for Trio Talweg including the EPK of their album Trios avec piano (2018), the recording of which is shown at the Arsenal of Metz.

He has been assistant film editor with Ivan Chaumeille several times, including for + One (2014), a creative documentary scheduled as part of the festival “Vidéodanse”.

As a photographer, he planned the exhibition Urbanicités (2016) with Corentin Hervouët at the 39/93 in Romainville, which focuses on daily life and the city, the multitude of loneliness.

Rafaël has been the audiovisual operator of the exhibition hall of the Philharmonie de Paris since 2016.
