Traditional Future
Recording of the performance of the show "Traditional Future" by dancer and choreographer Fernando Anuang'a at the Théâtre de Pierrefonds Saint-Pierre during the Souffle o.I. #3 Festival organized by Lalanbik - Indian Ocean Choreographic Development Center.
How to evolve from Tradition to Modernity without erasing its traces, without betraying its roots? The words of Anuang'a, a self-taught and atypical dancer-choreographer, are supported and inspired by Maasaï Songs, ancestral memory and rhythmic power, “essential engine” for his gestures. An initiatory journey with a desire to open up for a Traditional in the making, the dancer searches for a path for Maasai dance to fully live its era. Too reductive of the vertical energy of the Maasaï jumps, tourist clichés, Anuang’a attempts to evolve “the wave”, an undulatory gesture from the depths of the ages, with disconcerting skill. For his third Solo entitled “Traditional Future”, faithful to Moran, young warrior, and to the land of the Village, symbolic roots, Anuang’a seeks a deeper energy, and a more liberating expression.

Anuang'a, Fernando
A Kenyan dancer and choreographer, self-taught and unconventional, Anuang’a represented his country at every popular and official event at the start of his career in 1990. He draws from Tradition and is inspired by the beliefs that form the foundation of his creations. His movements, simply yet powerfully magnified by a wave-like motion, tell a true initiatory story. Energy is channeled into vertical jumps, and emotion is raw. Anuang’a combines strength and flexibility with vocal rhythms, the driving force behind his movement, expressing authenticity with passion.
