Odile Duboc -Centre chorégraphique national de Franche-Comté

Twenty years dedicated to creation have made Odile Duboc an irrefutable figure of French dance. Developing a gestural technique based on the musicality of bodies, her choreographic approach is based on the desire to simulate the imagination of each spectator.

Seated and following with her eyes the gestures of her interpreters, Odile Duboc passes on her conception of an inhabited abstraction, full of humanity. At the head of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Franche-Comté from 1990 to 2008, she elaborated a chiselled and highly suggestive writing style.

Her Trois Boléros, based on Ravel’s famous work, proposes three choreographic versions of this work: dances learnt as “snippets of history” evolving; a duo based on the memory of an encounter; and, finally, a composition for some twenty dancers that sketches the adventure of a community. Odile Duboc always said she was above all in love with movement. A feeling shared by her dancers whom we find here in rehearsal.

Duboc, Odile

A classical  dancer and self-taught teacher in Aix-en-Provence, Odile Duboc created her own school Les Ateliers de la danse in the 1970s. In 1983, she created  the association Contre jour, with her partner and lighting designer, Françoise Michel. In  1990 and until the end of 2008, she directed the Franche-Comté National Choreographic Center in Belfort, where she succeeded Joanne Leighton. In 1993, she created the work Projet de la matière, a milestone in the history of the new French dance. She  will be recognized as an important choreographer of French dance, and  will stage many shows and operas for various institutions, including the National Center for Contemporary Dance in Angers. She died of cancer on April 23, 2010 at the age of 69.

Paroles de danses

This collection dedicated to contemporary French choreographers is presented as a series of encounters around a creation. These portraits, which alternate interviews and extracts from performances, propose an approach to dance through thought and the issues of the body, while making visible the link existing between reflection and representation.

In the early 1980s, a new generation of choreographers emerged on the French scene. Occupying theatres with a radically different conception of dance, they won over a public and ensured their work and ideas would last. Today, most of them direct a national choreographic centre (CCN) or a recognised company. In the course of their career or in their work processes, they all ask questions linked to the world – whether focused on the body, writing, dance components (in particular space and time) or the relationship to other artistic forms.
