Djabote Doudou Ndiaye Rose

“Djabote”, the disc by Doudou Ndiaye Rose (chief drum major of Dakar), was produced by Eric Serra, the composer of the soundtrack of the Big Blue. The recording odyssey takes place on the island of Gorée, the symbolic site of the slave trade. At the head of more than 150 drum virtuosos, the old African chief makes the island vibrate to the sound of a rhythmic symphony, amazing in its precision and intensity.

There are no comments. Béatrice Soulé has chosen only to give voice to the notes and images to narrate the adventure of Djabote, the result of a “love affair” between two major artists, Eric Serra and Doudou Ndiaye Rose. The magnificence of the images and the power of the music speak for themselves. The erudite Senegalese artist knows the structure and meaning of more than 2,000 rhythms, and caused a revolution when he decided to initiate women, banned by tradition from playing percussion instruments. His large troupe is made up of his sons, sons-in-law, daughters and daughters-in-law. The camera magically captures the shimmering colours of the boubous, the look on a child’s face, the beauty of the bougainvilleas, the dance of the bodies, and the lofty gesture of the African Karajan.
