7 Dialogues

The 7 Dialogues conceived by DANCE ON ENSEMBLE resemble a  musical and choreographic laboratory. For this project, each member of  the company teamed up with a choreographer or director with the aim of  creating a solo in the form of a self-portrait. To link everything  together, the project’s artistic director, composer Matteo Fargion,  offered them a single musical structure: that of Schubert’s Erlkönig, inspired by Goethe’s Erlking,  which features a fantastic creature that haunts forests. Five extracts  will be presented in the CN D’s spaces. For the project, the American  dancer Ty Boomershine encountered the minimalist world of Beth Gill, an  emerging New York-based choreographer, who studied at the Tisch School  of the Arts. On the other side of the Atlantic, the German Brit Rodemund  embarked on a collaboration with Lucy Suggate, an independent dancer  known in the UK for her powerful and engaging solos. Others have chosen  to work with artists trained in the theatre. The director and visual  artist Tim Etchells, whose company, Forced Entertainment, is  internationally renowned, took part with Jone San Martin, a former  Forsythe dancer, who has also become a choreographer. As for Christopher  Roman, artistic director of DANCE ON ENSEMBLE, he called on an  unclassifiable artist who works at the frontier of performance, theatre  and dance: Ivo Dimchev, currently based in Brussels. Then there is  Frédéric Tavernini, a dancer and choreographer who trained at the dance  school of the Opéra de Paris, whose career has taken him to the Béjart  Ballet Lausanne, the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon and the Ballet de  Marseille. All these original artists, whose style has been forged  through decades of experience and collaborations, are linked together by  Matteo Fargion’s musical tapestry in which dancers, choreographers and  directors are all equal before the art of choreography.

Fargion, Matteo

Since 1989, when he attended the Gulbenkian Course for Composers and Choreographers, he has collaborated with many choreographers, including Jeremy James, Russell Maliphant, Lynda Gaudreaux, Stephanie Schober, Jonathan Burrows and three times with Siobhan Davies (Art of Touch, Bank, In Plain Clothes). Since his residency at the prestigious Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart he has also written much theatre music, for productions by Thomas Ostermeier (Schaubühne, Berlin,) Tom Kuhnel (TAT, Frankfurt) and Elmar Goerden, (Residenz, Munich).

His concert music has been heard around the world, played by leading performers such as Robyn Schulkovsky, Balanescu Quartet, Smith Quartet and Carole Cerasi. Together with close collaborator Jonathan Burrows, Matteo has made a trilogy of duets Both Sitting Duet, The Quiet Dance, and Speaking Dance, which have toured so far to over 20 countries and won a Bessie Award in New York. Matteo also teaches composition workshops at Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker's dance school in Brussels.

Matteo Fargion was born in Milan in 1961. He studied composition with Kevin Volans in South Africa and later with Howard Skempton in London.

Centre national de la danse, Réalisation

Since 2001, the National Center for Dance (CND) has been making recordings of its shows and educational programming and has created resources from these filmed performances (interviews, danced conferences, meetings with artists, demonstrations, major lessons, symposia specialized, thematic arrangements, etc.).

DANCE ON ENSEMBLE

The DANCE ON ENSEMBLE embodies our central aim: to show how dance as an art form benefits from experienced dancers.

Whereas only young bodies are associated with beauty and virtuosity  on stage, DANCE ON is formulating what will hopefully be a trend-setting  perspective for the development and presentation of the artistic  potential of mature dancers. The added physical intelligence, confidence  and expressiveness of the latter arise from lived experience. In  addition to sound knowledge of numerous dance techniques and  choreographic styles, mature dancers also have in-depth awareness of the  impact of their own bodies in movement.

As from 2019 Ty Boomershine will be responsible for upcoming artistic direction of the DANCE ON ENSEMBLE.

Meeting with literature

Collaboration between a choreographer and a writer can lead to the emergence of a large number of combinations. If sometimes the choreographer creates his dance around the work of an author, the writer can also choose dance as the subject of his text.
