Franzén, Helena

Helena Franzén, educated at Balettakademin (Ballet Academy), in Stockholm 1986-1989 and at the Institute of Choreography at Danshögskolan (University of Dance and Circus), Stockholm 1995-1998. Over the last 15 years she has choreographed more than 70 pieces. Helena Franzén's latest productions "I'm Not Looking Back" (2010), "Trigger Point" (2010), "Tide" (2008), "Act of no reply" (2007), "Apart" (2006) and "Delicious Liquids" (2005), have all been widely acclaimed. Her commissions for new works include the Göteborg Ballet, Skånes Dansteater, Norrdans, DDT Company, Copenhagen and the Royal Opera in Copenhagen. She also teaches in Sweden and abroad.

Helena Franzén's artistic interest focuses on the dancing; pure movement and the musical body. Anatomical structures, dynamic progression and physical functions are recurrent themes in her artistic pursuits. During the years, she has developed a personal movement vocabulary, charged with intricate, physical challenges and explosiveness. All of her dancers contribute with their individual integrity of motion and a strong and intense presence. In her most recent productions, she has developed a close collaboration with music and with musicians performing live. The music and the dance challenge each other, creating a nerve and density running through the dynamics of the moving body as well as the time structures. During 2011 she created "Fading" for The Göteborg Ballet, "Devious Paths" for Skånes Dansteater and the duet "Rävspel" for Regionteater Väst. She also toured her performance "Trigger Point" from 2010 to eight Swedish cities within DanceNet Sweden. Her performance "I'm Not Looking Back" will go on a similar tour within DanceNet Sweden fall 2012.
